Meet the editors of three independent and influential magazines. They will discuss how their magazines reflect and influence Australian politics, society and culture. How important are journals of opinion in our society? How do they contribute to the on-going public conversation? How do they remain independent and survive?

Sally Warhaft is a Melbourne anthropologist and the editor of The Monthly, Australia’s national magazine of politics, society and the arts. She is the author of Well May We Say: The Speeches that Made Australia (Black Inc) and is a regular commentator on ABC radio.

Jeff Sparrow is the editor of Overland. He is a Research Fellow at Victoria University and the author of, most recently, Communism: A Love Story (MUP). Overland ‘Temper democratic, bias Australian’ has been published since 1954. The magazine has made a significant contribution to Australian letters and political commentary.

Sophie Cunningham is the editor of Meanjin. Her second novel Bird (Text) will be published in June 2008. Meanjin is Australia’s leading literary magazine. While the main focus is on Australia, Meanjin also gives wide coverage to issues of global concern.

Gideon Haigh will be the participating chair. Haigh is a prolific contributor to many publications including the now defunct Bulletin, The Monthly, The Guardian and The Times in London. He is also the author of many books; the most recent is The Green & Golden Age (Black Inc).
